Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Proverbs 4:23
In this verse the word “guard” comes the Hebrew word that means take custody of.
Custody is defined as having protective care or guardianship of someone or something. In Proverbs 4:23 we are being called by God to take protective care and guardianship of our hearts. He is telling us to protect and defend our hearts. To look out for our heart’s best interests. This means guarding our hearts against sin, for one thing.
It also means setting up healthy boundaries for our hearts to keep functioning optimally. One of the main parts of the definition of guardianship is that the guardian takes care for something that is unable to care for itself.
The Bible warns us that our hearts are fickle and deceitful. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? Jeremiah 17:9 Therefore, the responsibility of our heart’s care falls on us because has God has granted us custody of our own hearts. He shows us the proper way to care for our hearts. But is our responsibility to care for hearts day to day. We must work in partnership with God to keep our hearts healthy.
Today I invite you to join me in taking custody of our own hearts. Protect and guard your heart from evil and sin. Set boundaries for your heart that help it to thrive the way God intended.
Until next time blessings and healing
